What to look for in a Video CMS

I get asked allot about a certain PHP script that seem to be making its way around the net. About 5 companies claim ownership. Its what you call a generic script but unlike generic drugs it probably won’t cure what ails you. Anyway I’m developing a generic answer to the generic question about the generic script.

Generic draft.

Yes there is a difference.

That script that’s been floating around for about a year. Various people have claimed ownership of the thing and these guys might actually own it. However I doubt they developed it. Its very basic but does a fine job of trans-coding video from the various formats to Flash. Past that point however its really not much to rave about but of course I’m biased. It is less expensive for sure so if you don’t need much more than trans-coding to Flash it might be your best option.

Our generic look.

The difference between ours and theirs is that ours is based on Drupal and does not interfere with Drupal core. We were offered that script you mention by the way. It would have been a quick fix but would have meant taking a less extensible and robust path to get what we needed.

Justbelive

What does this mean to you? Go to this link and scroll down the page. Do you see anything interesting? If so you need to find out if the script you reference has something similar. It probably doesn’t. If you happen to want something that you can’t find in the contributed modules you should check the CVS. If you can’t find it there then you will be able to draw from one of the largest developer communities surrounding any open source project. Period and end of the story.

But be sure to note I’m not trashing that product. Far from it. The core functions are elegant and clean. It uses Ffmpeg and Flvtool as do we.

I guess this means we need to come up with a name. Someone suggested ‘DruTube’. I like it.

Hello, it sounds like you guys really know a lot about Drupal. In the last few weeks I have been doing some research on video, drupal, and really taking a look at what’s out there.

I don’t claim to understand what this post is really about. I can’t tell if you’re angry, or what. Are you guys pissed about something? Accused of something?

It sounds like you are in the business of selling the installation of a Drupal distribution for video handling. Are you releasing any associated code? Is that what this post is about?

Please post for calrification. Video handling is getting mroe important all the time, and it sounds like your experience could really help some of the precocious drupal video junkies learn from your mistakes.

We’re always pissed about something. Look at the web and you will find something that gets you worked up. I promise you its one of the guilty pleasures provided by web 2.0 — anger mismanagement.

In this case however we’re not so much pissed as exasperated. There are allot of down and dirty PHP scripts that allow one to upload and transcode video to Flash and I think that’s great. However if you want to do something more than hang a bunch of Flash movies in your blog then you need to treat — or BE ABLE TO TREAT — video like any other type of content. This is not so easy. So what you detected is a certain bit if impatience with the attitude that suggests that trans coding to Flash video on the server is the biggest hurdle. Its actually where all your problems start.

This is a great idea, I will deffently be using
this technique (once i get my site up). I started reading
it yesterday and have read every entry and all of them are quaility!

Drupal CMS

Hi guys, my english is not the best, could you explain me, are you offering an video-cms?

If its with drupal i would looooooooooove to get it.
